Dr. Louis N. Hilleary, Poway's first doctor came to the valley in 1882. The following year, he married his childhood sweetheart, Frances Virginia Drew.
Phillip Crosthwaite, an Irishman, was Poway's first European settler, arriving here in 1871. He purchased ranchland around what is now the intersection of Poway and Community Roads.

Fred Albee, longtime manager of what is now the Sycamore Canyon Preserve and Goodan Ranch in southwest Poway. He served numerous terms as Poway's "Honorary Mayor" before incorporation. The water tank in the background was destroyed by the Cedar Fire in 2003.
Bert (born 1886) and Ernie (born 1874) Cravath, were both born in Poway and lived here for many years.
